Map Project Office and Father have designed Sonic Heirloom, a speculative object that reimagines human interaction with sound and memory.
A collaboration between Map Project Office and Father, this project explores how auditory experiences can be captured, preserved and relived, transforming sound into a tangible medium for storytelling and connection.
By integrating industrial and sound design, Sonic Heirloom challenges traditional notions of memory preservation, placing sonic qualities at the core of its conceptual and material development.
"Our brief challenged us to explore how we connect with memories through sound, moving beyond the digital to create a more tangible, lasting experience," said Map Project Office. "We aimed to give physical form to memories, challenging disposable technology and planned obsolescence."
Shaped from leather, glass and cast metal, the object features a glass vitrine, a cubic structure that houses the leather-clad player and the bell. The bronze alloy, sourced by Ore & Ingot, was chosen specifically for its rich, audible resonance, which delivers a unique sonic layer designed to remind listeners to reflect.
This project has been longlisted in the product design (health, wellbeing and wearables) category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
