Carol Ross Barney
American architect Carol Ross Barney is founder of Ross Barney Architects.
The Chicago-based practice specialises in public realm projects including the redesign of the Oklahoma City Federal Building, rejuvenating the Chicago Riverwalk and a NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland.
The firm recently replaced McDonald’s Chicago with a 19,000-square-foot steel and timber structure that utilises several sustainable elements including a canopy of solar panels.
She has won over 200 design awards, notably the 2023 AIA Gold Medal and Cooper Hewitt National Design Award.
Barney, who graduated from the University of Illinois, now teaches an advanced design studio at the Illinois Institute of Technology which she has held for over thirty years. She also served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica planning national parks.
