Sordo Madaleno has designed Amelia Tulum, a low-impact residential and commercial project in Aldea Zamá, Mexico.
Amelia Tulum is designed to blend seamlessly with the jungle, utilising elevated structures that respect the terrain, vegetation and climate.
Located in Aldea Zamá, one of the fastest-growing areas in the Riviera Maya, and surrounded by cenotes and jungle, the design embodies a deep respect for the natural environment, aiming to blend seamlessly into its context, much like the ancient Mayan ruins reclaimed by nature.
The architecture responds to the site's climate, topography and vegetation by minimising its footprint and elevating structures above ground, much like traditional stilt houses.
This low-impact approach not only preserves the terrain but also defines the project's aesthetic, creating a harmonious balance between built form and the surrounding jungle.
This project has been longlisted in the housing category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
