JCR Architecten has designed Kazemat Koningsweg, a small holiday house in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

Kazemat Koningsweg is a sunken hideout on the Veluwe, camouflaged by natural flora and blending into the terrain.

"As you approach, its angular, bunker-like form emerges, both hidden and revealed," said JCR Architecten. "A mirrored window reflects the landscape, uniquely disguising the structure."

Entry to Kazemat Koningsweg is through a metal door, descending to an open space that frames treetop views. Built with concrete, wood, and glass, the interior is robust yet refined.

Elevated above ground, the roof becomes part of the ecosystem, hosting wildlife, where a sloping column pierces the green roof, creating habitats for birds and bats while reconnecting architecture with nature.

This project has been longlisted in the small project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
