Yang Ying Design Studio has designed the Shuikou Shan Lead-Zinc Mine Site Museum, a historical relics museum dedicated to safeguarding and showcasing the mine heritage in Hengyang, China.
To preserve and showcase the legacy of Shuikou Shan Lead-Zinc Mine, China; first lead-zinc mining plant, the museum was established on a hill two kilometres from the conservation area.
The Shuikou Shan Lead-Zinc Mine Site Museum serves as a focal point, integrating with the heritage park's terrain and creating a 550-metre-long plaza.
Its architecture, resembling a massive 'ore' disrupted by force, is made from recycled concrete using local slag waste.
The design incorporates segmentation, folding and creasing to mimic mining tunnels with archways, corridors and staircases, creating a dynamic and immersive experience that connects visitors to the mine's historical significance.
This project has been longlisted in the cultural project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
