Here’s another designer dirigible: Manned Cloud is a flying hotel proposed by French designer Jean-Marie Massaud.

The whale-shaped airship, developed with French national aerospace research body ONERA, will be able to accommodate 40 guests and have a range of 5,000 km.

Manned Cloud will have a cruising speed of 130 km/h and a top speed of 170 km/h. Two two-deck cabin will contain amenities including a restaurant, a library, a fitness suite and a spa. There will also be a sun deck on top of the double helium-filled envelopes.

More on airships in our earlier stories on the Strato Cruiser “lifestyle Zeppelin” and the Aeroscraft ML866 hybrid aircraft.

Here are the details from Massaud:

MANNED CLOUD Cruise Airship, Paris, France

Living in the sky, watching the Earth from above. Rediscovering the marvel of traveling, experiencing contemplation. Exploring the world without trace

Manned Cloud is an alternative project around leisure and travelling in all its form, economic and experimental, still with the idea of lightness, human experience and life scenarios as the guiding principles. The spiral of Archimedes is the driving force of this airship in the form of a whale that glides through the air.

Manned Cloud is a hotel with a capacity of 40 passengers and staffed with 15 persons, that on a 3-day cruise in 170 km/h permits man to explore the world without a trace: to re-experience travelling, timelessness and enhance the consciousness of the beauty of the world - and to experience spectacular and exotic places without being intrusive or exploitative. For me this project sums up a way of thinking that is the stake of tomorrow.

Technical characteristics:

Capacity: 40 passengers + 15 crew members

Volume: 520.000 m3

Dimensions: L 210m x W 82m x H 52 m

First deck (500 m2) : Restaurant, lounge, library, fitness

Second deck (600 m2) : 20 rooms, terraces, spa, bar

Range : 5000 km / 72 h.

Maximum speed: 170 km/h

Cruising speed: 130 km/h

Scientific partnership and project development

ONERA (Office National d’Etudes et de Recherche Aérospatiale)

As the scientific partner of the project, the ONERA has started to carry out the first research and analysis. The ingeneers of the ONERA should be in a position to present the conclusion of the first system mission (initial scientific analysis; technical feasability) by summer 2007.

i hope it would run with solar power mainly, or make hydrogen with it to run at darker times. Otherwise it would be quite expencive in energyterms to have fun time for so small group of people per time. we need some sense in our behaving. Now money is #1 and most of the people do not understand what money is. it is still same animal skins etc what is was earlier, it hasnt changed, we create money by destroying our planetary vehicle :)

  25. Uday Says:

I think this is one of the wonderful creations of French designer Jean-Marie Massaud.

But the flying hotel would be completed?

  26. Jay Ess Says:

With it’s simple, yet soft and elegant flowing lines, I consider it to be a floating work of art! I would much rather see one of these floating by compared to a more traditionally designed airship. It’s much softer on the eyes. And in my opinion, I would think there would be quite a market for this type of travel. The somewhat low capacity of this design would indicate a fairly high ticket price, I would think. But if it’s luxury oriented and geared to appeal to the well-to-do crowd, I’m sure there would be no problem keeping this floating work of art in the air! Very Nice!

  27. BlogDog Says:

In looking at the design and thinking back to the Hindenburg, I am forced to say: Oh! The huge manatee!

  28. eYeinpalm Says:

This thing needs to be scrapped if it’s only something that the uber-rich can enjoy. If they decide to make tickets affordable then by all means go for it. The only way that would happen is if they ran it off of a new, clean energy source (which DO exist already).

We should stop making new nifty toys for the elite and start solving the problems in front of us, like this whole “clean food and air for everyone” problem.

With States inside the US having water shortages, worldwide cataclysmic escalation, overpopulation, pollution, bullshit governments, and corporate elitism, I really think we have bigger, more important issues to be dealing with than what the next luxury hotel will look like.

I say not one more luxury anything until the poor are taken care of.

  29. angela Says:

    oh its really pretty!!!

  30. Stephen Says:

They’ve stolen my idea! Mine is bigger, big enough to have a swimming pool with a transparent bottom. How awesome would that be - swimming in the sky. With or without a pool, I think it would be a superb way to have a holiday. So peaceful and relaxing. Travelling slowly across the countryside. Observing great events.
Yes solar panels to generate energy, new materials, advertising. Now, how to get the money to build them.

  33. Pieter Says:

If they intend flying that thing over Japan some confused or drunk whalers might want to shoot a harpoon at its butt. That could present some difficulties and some diplomatic drama. Now that I’d love to see unfold….. hehe

  34. alex Says:

how in the hell can this thing stay in the air?

  35. John S Says:

Wow! What a great idea! …… NOT!
Would be a disaster/”tragedy” just waiting to happen. The upside is that we could start a betting pool for guessing the correct number of days before it crashes or blows up in mid air. Now THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!

  36. Omray Says:

Now we’re talking! Floating quietly just above the earth would not only be exciting, soothing and educational; it would be a prime, fun method of re-establishing one’s personal connection with our biosphere. I love it and can’t wait for the chance to “take a float!”

  37. DensityDuck Says:

Modern discourse is wonderful, isn’t it?

    “Hey, here’s a neat-looking proposal for a blimp.”
“Yeah, but George W Bush is a BASTARD!”
    “…”

  38. david Says:

    I like it

  39. Tim Says:

Very elegant, I like it as well.

  40. Nathan Says:

Those that are talking about this thing blowing up need to learn a little chemistry. Helium is an inert gas, hence, non-flammable. The Hindenburg was initially designed to use helium, but because of the war, the engineers had to settle for hydrogen. It was that switch that ultimately caused the ensuing tragedy.
To the guy yelling about us spending money on toys for the rich: how do you think most of the things we all use today started (cell phones, automobiles, airplane travel to name a few). When a technology first starts, it’s usually extremely expensive and only for a select few. It’s only after it makes it to the mass market that economy of scale kicks in and the common person can afford it.
On power concern: LTA travel (lighter than air) is inherently extremely energy efficient. The only power necessary is to propel the craft forward, unlike HTA (heavier than air) travel, which needs to both keep itself in the air and propel itself forward. Solar panels attached to the top of a zeppelin could easily provide more than enough power. Had it not been for the Hindenburg, zeppelins would have been a common sight today, and things would probably be very different.
On doctor who: that two part episode is easily one of my favorites.

  41. CraigB Says:

I love the idea… I so miss not seeing the “sky whales” (blimps) of my childhood… then again, I still think the stupidest thing the U.S. ever did was kill it’s train system… what can I say, I’m a die-hard romantic.

Just keep me in mind as the staff Mystery Entertainer when it’s up and flying.

  42. napalm Says:

Joe said: “Oh, the huge manatee.”

ahahahaha, dude, you are fucking awesome. that game is one of the best flash games ever!

  43. Dave On Fire Says:

This is beautiful - although, as other commentators have already suggested, in the current political environment it would only end up being used as the plaything of the super-rich, not to replace aeroplanes for the sake of the environment.

One question: is the Manned Cloud in serious development, or is it just a pie-in-the-sky (pun unintended, but inevitable) “concept” at the moment?

  44. Gryphon Says:

Beautiful form… it’s fun to imagine the design possibilities for lighter than air craft. Also, what about personal airships? I want one just like it, only smaller. I am curious however, about its handling and vulnerability in erratic weather conditions. I’m not so sure I would want to be on board through a severe thunder storm, which unfortunately we can count on a lot more of in the near future.

  45. Mystikan Says:

This is something that, as others have posted, will only be available to the super-rich. In response to Nathan above, this will never be available to Joe Public, for the same reason Ferraris, yachts, private planes and mansions will never be available to Joe Public. It’s a status symbol, to be used only by corporate owners/executives, celebrities and politicians as they overfly us looking down on all the plebs.

Right now, 98% of the wealth and resources of this planet are controlled by 2% of its people. That’s bloody disgusting. But it’s typical of the whole human race. Consider this: if YOU could afford to go on this thing, would you buy a luxury cruise for yourself, or would you donate the money to help those not as well off as yourself? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

We’re all part of the problem, because human beings are all selfish greedy bastards. Myself included. This computer I’m typing on was made by some wage-slave kids in a Chinese sweatshop working their lives away at 5c per hour. I paid $AUD 2200 for it. Out of that $2200, the kids that made the parts probably saw less than a dollar. And by buying it, I supported the system that makes that happen.

I could have donated that money and really made some poor family’s Christmas. I could have saved the lives of a hundred starving children with that money. But I didn’t. Because I wanted a you-beaut new computer more than I wanted to make someone else’s life happier, or even to save others’ lives. And a hundred children are now dead because I was too mean to donate the money. By my own lights, that makes me a selfish greedy bastard just like everyone else. Just like all of you. How many children have died so we can all post our opinions on this blog?

Yes, I hate capitalism, I hate elitism, and I hate the system that gives me a computer when others don’t even have enough to eat - even as I appreciate the luxury of having a computer. I wish that everyone could have a home, food, and some enjoyment of life. Everyone should be able to have a computer, and everyone should be able have a go on this airship. But that isn’t going to happen, and none of us are ever going to make it happen. That’s the way humanity is, and we just have to live with ourselves as a consequence.

  46. Pete Says:

Anyone got pics and info in relation to flight deck and rooms? Appreciate any kind of help concerning this fantastic enterprise

  47. eliteiest Says:

    A thought to the doomsday “how dare anyone have anything” commies;

Just wait until we see ‘private blimp’ versions of this, where the top 10% or so (more than you think) can float peacefully above the ’soak the rich’ masses. Why would you ever even want to come down from your castle in the sky to be sneered at, unfairly overtaxed, and called a thief(!) by those who want to TAKE what you’ve EARNED?
Pop down once a month to stock up in an out-of-the-way spot(or budding air-yacht service industry) in whatever country you happen to be over, then it’s back up to flying the truly friendly skies…no airport wait, no nasty security checks , no terrorist threats.
Come to think of it…no crime (air-pirates?), traffic, zoning laws, squeegee kids, govt land seizures, paparazzi, wildfires, flooding, earthquakes…or even bad weather (float above the clouds)…hahaa

    I. Can’t. Wait.

  48. Giovanni Says:

It’s a fantastic idea . I have already seen a similar aircraft from Zeppelin space la. If mr Manned would like to start a commercial business I’m very interested for the italian market

  49. Steve Says:

Sorry to burst your bubble (pun intended), but this is an easy target for any terrorist organization. Flying low and hovering over an exotic local, and perhaps even landing, would be a wonderful experience with this aircraft, but the world would have to change dramatically for this vehicle to be a success. At this point, the Manned Cloud would be nothing more than a potential delivery vehicle of wealthy hostages.

  50. Yecats Says:

I think it should be named after Douglas Adams… I mean, C’mon… floating sperm whales? HHGG!!!

  51. selfish greedy bastard Says:

Actually, it has been shown that the Hindenburg failed so catastrophically because of the explosiveness of the fabric “dope” which rendered it airtight. It would have exploded quite nearly as badly had it been filled with Helium. The majority of it’s Hydrogen rose harmlessly away from the craft. Hydrogen must be the lifting gas of choice for the future for the simple reason that we are quickly running out of Helium, which is a non-renewable resource. The U.S. government controls most of it at the source: gas wells in Texas. Hydrogen, on the other hand, is the the most common element in the universe. It is intrinsically inexpensive to lift with Hydrogen so there need be no elitism attached to it- the real future of these types of craft is as freighters. Electric solar powered motors on Hydrogen-filled lifting bodies could lower freight delivery costs tremendously.
Incendiary woodpeckers might pose a problem, however.

  52. Gin Says:

For some of you who posted on this, idiotic idealism like that is what makes it hard for people to dream and make achievements, and some of you who have made bias comments and statements should be ashamed of yourself. As cool as an idea that is,I’m skeptic about it the same way I’m skeptic about many of these fantastical creations and building projects I see.Yes it’s bad that something like that might only be available to the rich, but in time something like that could be affordable to the public. For lack of a better comparison, games like Final Fantasy exhibition examples of how things like this could be open to the public to use,in particular an airship.

Yes it is horrid how things like this are usually accessible to the wealthy, along with the manner they are produced, but being limited your perspective of things like only denounces what you could do for yourself or accomplish, and undermines many other perceptions of what you or anyone else can strive for.So if you’re going to be that pessimistic and narrowed minded about it,then shut your face and move on.

I do have my concerns about the costs, the stability, and the various problems and issues that would rise with such a thing in the world we live in today, but it does not mean it is inevitable. To dream is to dare the limits of expectations,to make it a reality is to exceed them.

  53. despinoza Says:

So because there is ugliness in the world there should be no beauty?
What a sad perspective… life through crap colored glasses.

  54. Simon Gunson, NZ Says:

This is not a waste of time as someone previously said.

Based upon the fuel consumption for the failed CL160 concept this aircraft could carry a 747 load of pax with 20 times less fuel.

You only have to look at world oil prices or even at carbon footprint issues and suddenly this thing becomes a fundable concept

  55. Martino Says:

What will happen with the pool if the zappelin turns?

  56. Al Robbins Says:

Graceful design, reminiscent of Lockheed Constellation.
Wasteful loads on tail, and conflicted wing design, unless they are intended to be all-moving surfaces.

Delighted that there’s no indication of landing gear, it’s a ship of the air. Essentially weightless, but enormous inertia. It displaces 520 Tonnes of air at sea-level, roughly 470 Tonnes at 1000 meters elevation, much less with increasing height.

Unfortunately, no-one has ever flown, or towed, a large airship more than 150 Kilometers per hour, at any elevation.

Except for the target speed, the goals are extremely modest. Before it’s historic demise, the much smaller HINDENBERG carried more pampered passengers, plus a 50-man crew, further, at roughly 100 KPH.

    UPSHIP

  57. Jonathan Says:

Am I the only one that sees the Manned Cloud’s potential as the ultimate Bond-villain mobile fortress?

  58. Greg Flis Says:

If this vehicle can be launched away from the maddening airports I’m all for it.

  59. Frank Says:

I have always been fasinated by airships and so wish to see the giant rigids fly again before I die. This is a beautifull design and with all that top surface to collect solar power and todays technology and space age materials as well as non-flamable LTA gases, it’s a practical and very real possibility. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope too see it produced in great quantities soon! Most people don’t realize that 90% of the fuel used by airships is used to propel it not to keep it aloft as heavier than air (airplanes) do. People always talk about the quality of life but don’t realize that the faster we go , the very quality of life we claim to seek, is lost. Slower than an airliner? Of course it is, but so what. Although ones destination is exciting, the leisurely trip aboard an airship can be an even more gratifying and rewarding experiance. I’m sure the world will be shocked by the economy of flight this beautifull airship and others like her can achieve.
The best of luck on your venture. Lift ship and away!! Frank

  60. RichThePhotog Says:

Nathan - props on your reply - Good example? Remember when the Toyota Prius came out? Way too expensive for most; waiting list to get one, etc…In Los Angeles now, you can’t drive two blocks without seeing one.
To all the naysayers - In this day and age people such as ourselves can and DO make a difference! For instance, do you believe in global warming? Have you actually researched both sides of that argument?
I for one am not one of those ‘2% that controls 98%’, but I can and do nice stuff like getting one of the nice staterooms on a Royal Caribbean cruise, or by driving a nice car (Lexus Hybrid).
Also - my house is off the grid - solar….
Anyway - forget the manatee, lets see a flying Duck-billed Platypus!

The designer dirigible sounds incredibly interesting. Was wondering how close it is to becoming reality…

Also, I really would like to feature it in Corporate, which is the inflight magazine available in the Business Class section of Air-India.

Do let me know what the feasibility is of sending me a couple of high resolution renderings as well as more technical details. Due credits would of course be given.

Hoping to hear from you soon.
