Five years ago...

Five years ago this week a huge new stadium by Foster + Partners opened in London, while yet more radical projects were proposed for theĀ United Arab Emirates, including a bulging office block by Zaha Hadid and a revolving skyscraper.

Both in Dubai, the rotating tower by Dynamic Architecture and the curved Opus by Hadid were our most commented on stories of the week, as our readers were busyĀ questioningĀ the financialĀ viability of each project.

As well as unveilingĀ Wembley Stadium,Ā Foster + Partners also released plans that week for a Corten-clad wineryĀ in the Spanish countryside, whichĀ was completed three years laterĀ andĀ went on to win an RIBA award.

It was Belgrade Design Week over in Serbia, where both French designerĀ Ora-Ito and Spanish designerĀ Patricia Urquiola presented new work. Dezeen was there and we published our snapshots from the opening party.

Ceramics were also popular, as both designersĀ Jaime Hayon andĀ Sam Baron showed usĀ theirĀ new collections for Italian brand Bosa and we featured a lamp madeĀ from a fragment of an older one by Wieki Somers.
