Coalesse Design Group relocates studio to Munich

Dezeen promotion: US furniture brand Coalesse has moved its design studio from San Francisco to Munich, with the aim to boost its international reach.

The group, part of the Steelcase family of brands, is celebrating its 10th anniversary while relocating its design team to the German city to strengthen its global position in the workplace design industry.

Led by global director of design John Hamilton, the Coalesse Design Studio will continue to focus on creating products for the workplace, as part of the Steelcase Learning and Innovation Center.

The group hopes that from Munich, it will be better positioned globally to work with clients and collaborate with designers.

"We are more of the world through this move, with greater centrality to ideas coming, not only out of the US, but also from Europe, the Middle East and across Asia Pacific," said Coalesse general manager Lew Epstein in a statement.

"And with our partners in Munich, we're developing our own ideas into reality, faster and with greater innovation."

The Coalesse Design Studio aims to address the ever-changing world of work. With increased numbers of employees based remotely and a greater need for flexibility in office environments, the group intends to challenge typical workplace requirements with its products.

The studio's research-led approach to design combines knowledge of spaces and furniture, incorporates the latest technologies and materials, and focuses first and foremost on the user. The result is a range that is designed to be comfortable, functional and stylish.

"In today's mobile world people can work from anywhere and we have the opportunity to create spaces where they choose to work, not because they have to, but because they want to," said Hamilton.

"Our job as designers is to observe and ask a lot of questions: Where do people prefer to work if they can work where they want? What do meetings look like now? What does wellbeing mean in today's workplace?"

"We then take what we learn and design pieces that create a desire to use, that feel natural no matter how you want to use them," he added.

Coalesse products that demonstrate this ethos include a carbon-fibre chair that weighs less than five pounds, designed by Hong Kong-based Michael Young and launched in 2016.
