Paula Scher is a Dezeen Awards 2022 judge

Dezeen Awards judges advise entrants to "keep things simple and honest"

With less than two weeks until entries close, Dezeen Awards judges including Paula Scher, Rolf Hay and Hans Ulrich Obrist have told us what they are looking for this year.

"It's always good to see work with a sense of vision and dynamism," said Vicky Richardson, head of architecture at Royal Academy of Arts.

Her advice? "It's obvious really," she said. "Good photography and simple, unpretentious text."

Joining Richardson on the architecture jury is Serpentine Gallery artistic director Hans Ulrich Obrist, who is looking for work that has a lasting impact.

"Enzo Mari always told me when he created a project he always wanted it to last for at least 100 years and beyond," he said.

Architectural photographer Sebastian Weiss is on the media judging panel. He advocates not holding back. "It takes courage and conviction to take part in a competition and present yourself to the public," he said.

"That's what I would advise the participants – have courage and do it! Awards can be a career boost."

Lore Group's creative director, Jacu Strauss, is looking for entries in the interiors category that create an emotional connection. "I want to discover not just how the projects look, but also how they make us feel," he said.

"My advice would be to keep things simple and honest. Highlight the bigger objectives of each project and how the details contributed to that overall vision."

"Select your best work and explain it carefully and simply," said acclaimed graphic designer and Pentagram principal Paula Scher, who sits on the design jury. "I'm looking for great ideas beautifully executed."

Rolf Hay, founder and creative director of design brand HAY's furniture and lighting department, will join Scher on the design panel. He advises entrants to keep things simple. "Stay loyal to the dogma of your idea," he told Dezeen.
