IKEA Festival at Milan design week to explore "life at home and beyond"

Dezeen has teamed up with IKEA for its six-day IKEA Festival during Milan design week, which includes exhibitions, installations and talks alongside the Swedish furniture brand's latest product launches.

Taking place at BASE, a 12,000-square-metre events space in the city's Zona Tortona neighbourhood, IKEA Festival will explore how the relationship between people and their homes has evolved over time, and show how a more mindful home can improve our everyday lives as well as the planet.

The IKEA Festival will also showcase the latest in design and home furnishings celebrating stories and products that centre around "life at home".

This year, IKEA will unveil a variety of products designed in collaboration with its partners across the globe. This includes collections from Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis, Finnish lifestyle design brand Marimekko and electronic dance music artists Swedish House Mafia in the first-ever look at upcoming products anticipated to launch this upcoming and following year.

In accordance with the theme of this year's Fuorisalone – Between Space and Time – IKEA has also curated a festival programme of events and experiences linked to life at home and the design of our spaces from 6 to 12 of June.

A courtyard area within the space will be brought to life with a series of classic Milanese houses that visitors will be able to explore. The homes will reflect the lives of three different families, with each one telling the unique story of those who live in it.

Other exhibitions will include a physical and digital installation called Ögonblick – A Life at Home Exhibition.

Inspired by H22 – a project in Helsingborg, Sweden, that is aiming to build the sustainable city of the future – the exhibition is named after the Swedish word for "moment" and will tell the story of different moments in life through the lens of different people and their relationships with their homes.

As well as a cinema and rooftop, food stalls, circular shops and performance areas for musicians and speakers will be distributed across the outdoor areas and unique pop-up experiences will transform daily.

These will include an installation to share stories of home as told by young refugees and the reveal of a new product range designed by Swedish House Mafia.

Events include panel discussions with guests such as British designer Ilse Crawford and Marcellis.

"We're happy to be back in Milan this year, to come together to share and experience some well-needed inspiration and optimism towards the everyday," said Fredrika Inger, global range manager at IKEA of Sweden.

"We look forward to having valuable conversations around design and life at home and giving some sneak peeks of the coming products – meaningful, well designed, and affordable for many."
