Dezeen Showroom: Dutch architecture studio MVRDV has released the High Profile lighting collection, which is made from aluminium profile offcuts discarded from the manufacture of Delta Light's products.

The aluminium profiles are typically used by architectural lighting brand Delta Light to recess lights in walls or ceilings.

MVRDV collaborated with the brand to reuse the waste material in a design that aims to showcase the beauty of a component that is usually hidden.

Each High Profile lamp is handmade by combining the aluminium offcuts into a sculptural lampshade, which is available as a sconce, cube-shaped pendant and floor lamp.

"The design looks critically at the manufacturing process, finding not only opportunity but also beauty in elements that are normally discarded as waste," said MVRDV.

"The amazing details of these profiles are usually hidden inside the wall or ceiling – we wanted to make their beauty visible as the main feature of the new design," added Peter Ameloot, managing director of Delta Light.

"We were very surprised and at the same time very happy to see that MVRDV not only appreciated the level of precision and expertise that goes into the design and production of these profiles, but that they even wanted to bring the raw material to the forefront," said Ameloot.

"To see a product that is usually completely integrated and anonymous in architecture evolve to become such an eyecatcher was a very inspiring exercise for us."

According to MVRDV, High Profile's environmental impact is reduced because the aluminium parts do not need to be newly manufactured or transported.

"The design invites consumers to think carefully about the materials that are all around them, to see beauty in the everyday and to see opportunity in what we usually ignore," said MVRDV.

The design is available in a variety of bright colours that soften its industrial appearance, including pink, ochre, green and blue.

The project was shortlisted in the lighting design category of Dezeen Awards 2022, alongside a lamp made from a split piece of wood and a glass pendant light designed to celebrate Mexican craftsmanship.
