Corian Solid Surface range aims to reduce hospital-acquired infections

Promotion: Corian Solid Surface range is designed to reduce microbial growth making it ideal for use in hospitals and healthcare environments, according to Corian Design business of DuPont.

Corian Solid Surface range is made from a combination of aluminium trihydrate (ATH), pure acrylic resin (PMMA) and environmentally friendly pigments.

According to Corian Design, its Solid Surface range "makes an ideal choice" in medical environments as it is non-porous, which prevents dirt – including mould and bacteria – from becoming established on the material.

As a result, the product aims to prevent microbial growth while dirt is kept on its surface and can be easily removed with cleaning fluid.

The material can be used for different surfaces, including countertops, surgical scrub stations and wall cladding. In operating rooms, for example, Corian Design says the use of the surface reduces the number of hospital-acquired infections.

"Whether in the operating theatre, X-ray room, laboratory or patient room, hygiene is of paramount importance," said Andrea Albert, EMEA marketing leader at Corian design.

"The advantages of a material that allows the creation of almost anything – from one-piece seamless installations to grout-free wall cladding to hard-wearing countertops with renewable surfaces to stylish, easy-to-clean reception desks – cannot be overstated."

Corian Design's Corian Solid Surface was used in the Medicana Ataköy Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey, which was designed by Turkish architecture practice ZOOM/TPU.

ZOOM/TPU chose the surface for its "elegance and functionality", and the product is used throughout the hospital, from the lobby and reception to the patient rooms and operating areas.

"Furthermore, we capitalised on Corian's extraordinary hygienic properties to facilitate the cleaning and disinfection process in the hospital, effectively reducing the risk of healthcare-acquired infections."
