British-Nigerian designer Yinka Ilori has designed a collection of bins, ironing board covers and kitchenware for home product brand Brabantia.
Named simply the Home Collection, the range was design by Ilori to add colour and joy to everyday items in the home.
"For me, the whole idea was to find the magic in the everyday," Ilori told Dezeen. "We put so much emphasis on the design of luxury and collectible objects, but often disregard the items we use multiple times a day – I wanted to shift that focus."
"We all have these daily rituals and routines, and the objects we use become such a big part of our lives, so why shouldn't they bring us a little joy? With Brabantia, I wanted to take these familiar, functional objects and give them personality, colour and a sense of play."
Ilori designed a trio of bins for Brabantia – a dual bin on legs, and five litre and 30 litre pedal bins.
The range also includes an ironing board and two additional covers, a drying rack and a gift set containing a water bottle, breakfast bowl and salad bowl.
All of the pieces are covered in Ilori's signature patterning and bright colours. The bins and the ironing board covers share a motif that begins as multiple orange lines before becoming a unified striped pattern.
"The artwork represents lots of individual efforts eventually coming together to form one bigger picture, much like the life you create," said Ilori.
"That's why the lines at the top feel more individual, before gradually connecting into a continuous pattern towards the bottom to create a joyful whole," he continued.
"As so often, I work with contrasting colours, in this case yellow, orange and purple, to create a real sense of rhythm and movement. I wanted each piece to feel like it had its own persona, while still feeling like part of the same family."
According to Ilori, bins were a perfect medium for his playful makeover.
"We spend so much time with these objects, often without really thinking about them, so I loved the idea of giving them a bit more inner life," he said. "Think of it as being the curator of your own home and placing artworks in unexpected places."
"If putting the ironing board up or displaying your bin can make you smile, that can elevate your day. I like taking something ordinary and creating a moment where people can experience a little bit of fun, even in the most mundane parts of the day," he continued.
"Plus, I genuinely love ironing. I find it very soothing, so applying my artwork to an ironing board felt like a natural extension of that."
Asked what would be the logical conclusion of his mission to add joy to mundane items, the designer suggested that his next project could be a toilet brush.
"The toilet brush," he said. "Definitely the toilet brush. I think we've found our next project!"
The collection for Brabantia complements a wider homeware and furniture collection Ilori recently created for department store Dunelm. Other recent designs by the designer include a Man of the Match trophy for the Africa Cup of Nations and an installation for Veuve Clicquot.
