Matthew Mazzotta

Portrait of Dezeen Awards 2019 judge Matthew Mazzotta

American artist Matthew Mazzotta combines art, activism and urbanism to create experiences within our built environment.

Mazzotta studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received a bachelor of fine arts followed by a masters of science from MIT’s programme in Art, Culture and Technology. Mazzotta is a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University.

The artist creates community-specific projects involving local people in civic participation and social engagement. In 2013 Mazzotta worked alongside the Coleman Center for the Arts to create the Open House in Alabama. The project - a house that unfolded to become an open air theatre - became a way to bring local people together.

In 2018, Mazzotta’s project The Storefront Theater won architecture project of the year at the inaugural Dezeen Awards. Through this project, the artist built a retractable theatre that folded down from a disused storefront as a way to create social initiative to reinvigorate the neglected main street in Lyon, Nebraska.
