Exoskeleton House
by Takt Studio

Shortlisted for residential rebirth of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, Exoskeleton House by Takt Studio is a renovation of a 1950s brick bungalow in the foothills of the Illawarra mountains, Australia.

The extension, a timber frame with a steel exoskeleton, abuts the north side of the original house. With views of the surrounding cliffs, the overhanging steel-frame shell also shelters a veranda and deck area. Called Exoskeleton House, the redesign provides adequate storage and flexible spaces for a family, whilst remaining a close relationship with the landscape. Where the roof slopes downwards towards the main house, the slim gap between it and the timber box has been closed with glazing, creating clerestory lighting.
