Red Cross Volunteer House
by COBE

Shortlisted for civic building of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, Red Cross Volunteer House by COBE doubles as a public meeting place.

A giant staircase tops the new Red Cross Volunteer House in Copenhagen. The triangular building has a tiered roof that branches out from the second floor of the old building and steps all the way down to street level. The extension is directly connected to its existing main entrance, thus creating a common entrance to the Red Cross building. With a roof that is also accessible to the public, the Red Cross Volunteer House is designed with the ambition to encourage passersby to enter and explore the space. Although the project was built for Denmark's 34,000 Red Cross volunteers, it has also been designed as a public space and an urban living room for the city.
