Naidi Community Hall
by Caukin Studio

Shortlisted for small building of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, Naidi Community Hall by Caukin Studio is a wooden cultural building for a small village in Fiji to replace the previous structure that was destroyed by a cyclone.

Called Naidi Community Hall, the structure serves the 400 residents of Naidi on Vanau Levu, the second-largest island in Fiji. Architecture collective Caukin Studio worked collaboratively with the Naidi Village community and international volunteers to build the replacement hall. The design process began six months before construction began and included input from the community at every stage.

The high-ceilinged flat-roofed structure consists of a single open-plan room with three doors at the entrance that open to create a stage for performances. Unglazed clerestory windows also feature along each side of the room to maximise air flow. Built in just eight weeks, the hall provides a space for the community to come together for meetings, celebrations, weddings, funerals and traditional Fijian dance performances.
