Hotel Gahn
by Studio Locomotive

Weerapon (Beer) Singnoi

Studio Locomotive has designed Hotel Gahn as a nod to local Baba Nyonya culture in Takua Pa, Thailand.

The unique transcultural hybridisation emerged from the tin rush during 1860s-1970s, when Chinese miners immigrated to Malay Peninsula having their inter-ethnic marriage with native inhabitants, giving birth to mixed-race descendants called Baba Nyonya.

The experiential space of Hotel Gahn reintroduces the historical charm of the retired old town Takua Pa, suggested in the space programming, choices of materials, material treatments, and vernacular architectural features relatable to what could be seen in the local homes.

This project has been longlisted in the hospitality building category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
