Chairwave is an interactive row of chairs that invites people to sit next to each other in public areas.

The seating, designed by Amsterdam-based design Studio VOUW, was built in cooperation with Amsterdam Metropolitan Area to create a more friendly atmosphere in public spaces.

As an individual sits down on Chairwave, the nearest seats fold open as a seating option for the following person, which creates a perfect opportunity to strike up a conversation.

This change turns public space into a place where people meet, instead of a place where individuals are glued to their smartphones.

This project has been longlisted in the seating design project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
