The Royal Institute of Art

Norell/Rodhe has overhauled the interiors of a 1732 navy building on the island of Skeppsholmen in Stockholm.

The Royal Institute of Art has a new home for faculty and students working with photography, multimedia and moving images.

The design sifts through historical layers of the building, juxtaposing them against each other and against new additions.

Throughout the interior, key existing elements, such as braced timber posts, are emphasised with colour and put in dialogue with new and reused furniture with a monolithic materiality.

The transformation revolves around a limited number of precise adjustments, rather than a budget and material-intensive refurbishment.

This project has been longlisted in the civic and cultural interior project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
