Caffeinated Architecture
by Objects and Ideograms

Alex Schofield

Designed by Objects and Ideograms, Caffeinated Architecture is an exploration into the use of coffee grounds for design.

This project proposes and demonstrates a material application which utilises unique personal research in 3D powder printing, CNC routing, and biomass growth through mycelium – all with use of reused coffee grounds.

Digital fabrication technology offers creative opportunities for architecture and construction from the scale objects, components, to buildings – but not at the expensive of material consideration. We are bound to the grounds of our own waste, we must turn over these used grounds, and build.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
