Crematorium Siesegem
by Kaan Architecten

Shortlisted in the civic and cultural interior of the year of Dezeen Awards 2020, Crematorium Siesegem features calming and contemplative spaces that use an austere material palette of concrete and grey marble.

The surrounding greenery of Crematorium Siesegem in Belgium is envisioned as an extension of the building and is an important part of funeral ceremonies.

The south-western corner of the building opens onto a patio and serves as a transitional zone, welcoming visitors and leading them inwards.

Inside, a clear sequence of spaces unfolds so the visitors never feel lost; the architecture offering spatial guidance.

The crematorium encompasses ceremonial halls flanked by a family room and a place for condolences opening towards the outdoors.

The design of the building internalises the landscape so that its tranquility could console visitors and provide strength.
