MJ Residence
by Seear-Budd Ross

Thomas Seear-Budd

Seear-Budd Ross used a refined palette of travertine and walnut to imbue this 1910s villa in New Zealand with a warm, calm and inviting atmosphere.

The single-storey weatherboard villa is a classic style of architecture that gives New Zealand’s inner suburbs a distinctive character. As the most popular design for new houses between the 1880s and World War I, the villas are typically small and with period detailing that contributes to their traditional, timeless character. Seear-Budd Ross sought to retain the villa’s charm while improving the layout and injecting more natural light though sympathetic architectural moves.

This project has been longlisted in the small interior category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
