Walk / House

EKAR designed the Walk / House in Phetchabun, Thailand.

This project is a tranquil part of a temple in Thailand, surrounded by trees and mountains. It pays homage to walking meditation – one of the most significant practices that monks apply every day.

Instead of designing a traditional house, a key concept of walking meditation is a concentration on the present dimensions of earth and sky to enhance awareness of mental and physical states – this has been reinterpreted in the architectural context of Walk / House.

The architecture of Walk / House is designed to blend with the natural mountainous landscape around the temple; to merge the monk’s daily practice in the architecture seamlessly with nature.

As the practice continues on the path, they met not only themselves but the existence of their surroundings. This can expand the old-day limitation of walking meditation in the limited area to a new way of meditation.

This project has been longlisted in the cultural building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
