PPAG Architects has created an apartment house on the site of the former Otto Wagner Hospital in Vienna to cater for residents and those who enjoy walking within its public grounds.

The former Otto-Wagner-Spital complex on the Baumgartner Höhe is a cultural landmark, with the grounds belonging to it a popular local recreation destination for the residents of Vienna. As a result, the idea of a building design ‘on tiptoe’ was realised, taking both nature and walkers into consideration.

A series of residential units – along with private open spaces – are stacked up, gradually set more and more towards the top. The residential units have various layouts, multiple orientations, and ingenious views. Each has areas with ceilings of considerably greater heights and tall windows.

Each of the flats also has at least one, but usually several, terraces with refined views in different directions: over the entire city, to the horse stable with its paddock or to the ancient trees beyond.

This project has been longlisted in the housing project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
