Curtin Yarning Circle
by UDLA

YvonneDoherty

UDLA designed the Curtin Yarning Circle in Perth, Australia.

This project is an outdoor learning environment at the Curtin University campus with a "strong cultural link to the Bush University site at Nowanup."

The Curtin Yarning Circle is a culturally welcoming space for "On Country" and integrated learning experiences within Curtin University’s Bentley Campus – in Perth, Western Australia on Whadjuk Noongar Land.

Turning the traditional classroom environment inside out, the Yarning Circle delivers unique educational and social outcomes for both the campus and the wider community.

The project's inception and development, with cultural guidance from Professor Simon Forrest, the University's elder in residence at the time, and Dr Noel Nannup, followed an Indigenous design methodology that centred on co-design, collaborative exchange and Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

This project has been longlisted in the landscape project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
