Amelia Tavella Architects has designed the Rebirth of the Convent Saint-François in Corsica, France.

This project was the rebirth and rehabilitation of a historical yet dormant monument – originally built in 1480 – by Amelia Tavella and her team on her native island of Corsica.

With its back to the cemetery, the convent overlooks the village. Straight ahead is the spectacle of the Corsican mountains – which seem to move in the direction of the clouds and change appearance with the seasons. Here pulses the heart of Alta Rocca.

"I believe in higher and invisible forces. The Convent Saint-Francois is part of this belief. Faith rallies to the sublime." Amelia said. "I chose to keep the ruins and replace the torn part, the phantom part, in copper work which will become the House of the Territory."

"The copper allowed a gesture of softness, it is feminine like stone," she added. Amelia Tavella has clearly honoured nature in her work here – an essential component of this edifice, which evidently protected it before its resurrection.

This project has been longlisted in the rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
