Silence – Alone in a World of Wounds by Studio Morison
Charles Emerson

Studio Morison has created a pavilion space unveiled in Yorkshire Sculpture Park that addresses the notion of salvation from extinction through art.

The project is a response to the question 'Can art save us from extinction?', and exists as an extended open pavilion with passageways and a chamber providing space for quiet reflection.

Developed by artists Heather Peak and Ivan Morison from natural materials including timber, it is built within a stand of birch trees and aims to create solitary communion with the natural world.

To discover the inner passageway, visitors must first circle the structure beneath the overhang of a thatched roof. Once inside, a series of staggered doorways gradually lead along a contemplative cloister-like path to its heart.

The central chamber encircles a ring of fourteen silver birches. There are two seating areas for contemplation: one around the exterior perimeter and another inside, sheltered by the overhanging eaves.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
