Garden House by Keiji Ashizawa Design
Ben Richards

Keiji Ashizawa Design has created an intimate hut-like space in the garden of a three-storey house in a quiet residential area of Tokyo.

The project is an ode to nature in the busy metropolis and stands as a minimal structure comprising four tatami mats and a tokonoma, a Japanese alcove, with a single piece of camphor wood in the shape of a horigotatsu-style table.

Complete with the client's family Buddhist altar and stones once used for weighing down pickles at their home in Kyoto, Garden House is a contemporary take on traditional Japanese aesthetics that allows its owners to feel connected to nature in every way.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
