Erlebnisportal am Stadtschloss Weimar by Helga Blocksdorf / Architektur

Helga Blocksdorf / Architektur has created a contemporary structure atop a historic wall in central Germany.

The project is located in the city of Weimar and is a temporary structure that stands as an experimental and innovative showpiece to represent the change in times in and around the Weimar Stadtschloss, the city palace.

It sits between the Red Palace, the Yellow Palace, the New Guardhouse and the extension of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, above and on top of Clemens W. Coudray's classicist wall.

The structure is made of cross-laminated timber. Birch bark, the historical building material, was re-implemented as a façade in an experimental development. The material references the Bark House in nearby Ilmpark, which was erected under the direction of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on 9 July 1778 for the duration of a single theatrical performance. The association invites the viewer to think about the ephemeral aspects of the building and the possible time frames of certain installations.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
