AHMM with RUFFARCHITECTS has designed the refurbishment of Church Road in London, United Kingdom.

This project is focused on the refurbishment of a stunning home in the Highgate Conservation area. Set amongst the only remaining ancient oaks outside Highgate Wood, the house is nestled in a semi-sunken position in the heart of the urban city.

A failing building when purchased, but originally touted as an innovative timber framed house, Church Road is an example where a repurposing mindset was fundamental in creating a beautiful and functional family home, capable of adapting to current and future demands. Demolition VAT savings outweighed the costs of fundamental repair but admirably, client-and-design-team were determined to deliver a refurbishment project regardless of the financial imbalance.

Adaptability, accommodating growing and changing dynamics over the years proceeded the now "new normal" of working and studying from home, the designs focused on re-distribution of uses, creating family room suites and bedrooms, as well as working areas. Directional vistas from each space provide concealed yet subtle interconnection, with the study and modest garden studio mimicking each other in materiality but responding individually to their characters.

"The dynamic home-working spaces are more than simple desks and internet connectivity, engagement with the natural world ensured creativity and wellness," added RuffArchitects.

This project has been longlisted in the urban house category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
