TanzoSpace has designed Zhangjiakou Library in Zhangjiakou, China.

This project is the largest library on the east side of Zhangjiakou, with a total construction area of 22,000sqm – with its total book collection totalling about 1.1 million volumes, with 2,100 reading seats.

"In this project, economics is aesthetics; abandon trivial and complicated decorations to optimise cost and precise design," noted TanzoSpace.

The open-shelf book storage in the library is integrated with the reading area in order to provide the functions of "collection, search, borrowing and reading". Establishing spiritual civilisation is inseparable from cultural genes here.

Zhangjiakou Library expands the dimensions of people's artistic and literary life and shapes the in-depth experiences of interactions between humans and architecture during the decades. A public library supports people's spiritual breathing as the lung of the city and heals people of all ages.

This project has been longlisted in the civic and cultural interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
