The Architectural Design & Research Institute of Zhejiang University has produced a majestic lighting scheme in China that achieves harmonious coexistence with its surroundings.

The project is located in the Da Yu Mausoleum Scenic Area in Shaoxing city, where nearby mountains sit by landmarks of importance including the Da Yu Memorial Square, Jiulong Altar, the statue of Emperor Da Yu on the hilltop and the distant Xianglu Peak and Yonghe Tower.

The low-carbon and energy-saving lighting design respects the existing natural and architectural setting, and achieves harmonious coexistence with its surroundings by combining natural light with artificial lighting.

Dual colour temperature lamps mimic the brightness and colour variations of daylight, while a photosensitive system automatically adjusts the brightness inside the building based on the weather outside. Further highlights include light beams and projection lamps to create a meditation space under the dome, evolving the use of light into a medium which enables divine communication between man and the environment.

This project has been longlisted in the architectural lighting design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
