FIGR Architecture Studio has developed That Old Chestnut in Cremorne, Australia.

Located amongst the hubbub of delivery trucks, bicycles, and a never-ending procession of vehicle traffic, this project sits within a minute 160 square metre site, backing onto a key commercial precinct within Cremorne in Melbourne.

"As our cities incrementally and inevitably densify, we look to occupy the tiny nooks and crannies for a place we can call home," said FIGR Architecture Studio.

The brief was to maximise comfort, solar passive design and provide access to natural light – a challenge due to the twelve-storey development in construction nearby. To solve this, the studio worked closely with a neighbour who was granted a planning permit for a two-storey extension. Together, sky views were essentially doubled and visual privacy for both homes was achieved.

This project has been longlisted in the urban house category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
