David Kohn Architects has built Cowshed in Devon, United Kingdom.

Artist Suzanne Blank Redstone and her husband Peter Redstone have transformed Middle Rocombe Farm into a vibrant housing community, with Cowshed being the final addition.

Retaining most of the original structure, the home boasts a rich connection to the surrounding landscape and a robust agricultural character.

Cornish concrete blocks and Devon cedar boarding enhance the straightforward materials palette, paying homage to the cowshed's history. Inside, exposed surfaces celebrate its past while inviting a play of coloured light through Suzanne's artworks on the roof.

The project exemplifies progressive reuse, creating accessible spaces, and fostering a resilient community in a rural setting.

This project has been longlisted in the rural house category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
