The University of Hong Kong/Lidia Ratoi and John Lin have completed the Traditional House of the Future in Nanlong Village, China.

Professors John Lin and Lidia Ratoi created the Traditional House of the Future by combining an abandoned traditional wooden house in China with 3D-printed structures.

The original house was scanned, dismantled, and then expanded and supported on 3D-printed walls. The 3D-printed exterior walls provide additional space, while new dividing walls create an entrance courtyard, kitchen, and bathrooms.

Combining robotic on-site printing and traditional craftsmanship, the prototype project is part of a government initiative in Nanlong Village, southwest China, to renovate dilapidated wooden houses and prevent abandonment.

This project has been longlisted in the rural house category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
