KCAP has revitalised the historic Stationspostgebouw, a functionalist-style former postal sorting centre in The Hague, Netherlands, into PostNL's new headquarters.

The project made a feature of the 1939 structure's existing prefabricated concrete columns, which now frame a full-height atrium under the skylit roof.

The glass brick facade and windows were retained, enhanced by an internal "second skin" of glazing. Meanwhile, the central atrium hosts zigzagging staircases and cascading floors, resembling the conveyor belts of the past.

On the ground floor, a "community centre" offers a cafe and meeting spaces, while wooden partitions and curving planters on nine office floors create adaptable workspaces.

According to KCAP, the retrofitted Stationspostgebouw is the Netherlands first Listed monument certified with energy label ‘A’.

This project has been longlisted in the workplace project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
