Studio Mortazavi has designed the Villa San Francisco in California, United States.

Villa San Francisco, designed by Studio Mortazavi, is the first French artistic residency in the United States.

"We created a special space, made by artists, for artists," said Studio Mortazavi. "Together with them, we crafted an 'experience de vie' for the residents to feel immersed and inspired."

Studio Mortazavi's design of the soft colour palette was said to be drawn from Wayne Thiebaud's "French Pastries" painting which is a marriage of Californian tonalities with an epitome of the French culinary culture.

The colour patterns of the walls follow the scalable dimensions of Villa Medici's mouldings – while Daniel Buren-inspired stripes make the journey from the Palais-Royal in Paris to the Villa San Francisco, adding a contrasting element as a graphic and iconic anchor.

This project has been longlisted in the home interior category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
