Urban Radicals has designed A Brick for Venice, a low-carbon construction product.

As its land subsides and the planet's sea levels rise, the Italian city of Venice has experienced flooding of unprecedented frequency and severity. These crises are exacerbated by the clay-like silt that regularly clogs the city's canal network.

This polluted sediment is dredged by Venice's municipal authorities, to maintain the city's waterways, and is routinely dumped on the nearby uninhabited island of Tresse for permanent storage.

A Brick for Venice explores the potential of this natural and readily available material for use as a low-carbon construction product.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design (building product) category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
