Michael Hsu Office of Architecture has designed Burnet Place, a purpose-driven affordable housing community in Austin, United States.
Burnet Place is a purpose-driven affordable housing community designed to serve people living with HIV and AIDS in Austin.
This project balances dignity, security and a sense of home, prioritising healing through architecture. Inspired by the armadillo, its protective shell shields a warm and welcoming courtyard, a central space for connection and respite.
Thoughtfully scaled to complement the surrounding neighbourhood, the design integrates 61 studio apartments, communal spaces and outdoor areas that foster community engagement.
Every detail – from passive cooling strategies to natural materials – supports long-term resilience and well-being, demonstrating how design can elevate transitional housing into a place of belonging.
This project has been longlisted in the housing category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
