Daipu Architects has renovated the courtyard space at the Streaming Light Exhibition Hall for the GuanZhong Mangba Art Festival in Xi'an, China.

This renovation project transforms an abandoned kitchen and warehouse into an exhibition space, blending local materials with contemporary design.

Wave-shaped perforated metal facade reinterprets traditional tiled roofs, creating a dynamic effect.

"We transformed a dilapidated courtyard in Caijiapo village into an exhibition space for the Guanzhong Mangba Art Festival," said Daipu.

Inspired by local tile forms, the architects introduced a wave-like metal mesh facade, improved drainage with a rotating curtain system and created a circular path connecting trees and spaces.

Prefabricated perforated panels provide shifting light and shadow, enhancing the visitor experience; the original kitchen chimney was repurposed as a skylight niche and a new steel structure supports the roof, blending functionality with a poetic rural renewal vision.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
