Joel Hügli has designed Lux – The Circular Mattress for Ecomade, a durable, refurbishable and recyclable comfort mattress.

In Switzerland, one million mattresses are incinerated yearly, while two-thirds of the population wish to sleep better. These are significant environmental and social issues.

Joel Hügli addressed these in his master's thesis and later founded Ecomade, Switzerland's first company producing fully recyclable mattresses.

Designed for healthy sleep and circularity, Ecomade mattresses feature long-lasting parts, refurbishable natural fibre covers and spring-based cores with as little foam as possible.

Each mattress has a QR code to order spare parts, trace the supply chain and access recycling services and Ecomade helps reduce resource use, cut CO2 emissions by over 50 per cent and improve sleep quality.

This project has been longlisted in the product design (health, wellbeing and wearables) category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
