Samuel Wilkinson Studio has designed Sorpresa for Astep, a large volume lamp that self-expands on release from its packaging.

Sorpresa is a new lightweight volume lamp with a surprise, hence its name. A key challenge of large volume lamps is their packaging size, contributing to an increased carbon footprint due to inefficiency in the transport and warehouse space.

"With Sorpresa, rather than opting for a disassembled flat-pack lamp, we developed a pre-assembled lamp with an honest timber mechanism that enables it to expand upon release from its packaging," said Samuel Wilkinson Studio.

The design incorporates recycled and recyclable materials, features a removable and washable cover and allows for all parts to be easily separated at the end of its life cycle.

This project has been longlisted in the lighting design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
