Teruhiro Yanagihara has designed the Tray and Flat tiles series for Alternative Artefacts Danto, reframing the tile as a versatile object.
Produced at a 140-year-old factory on Awaji Island, the tiles draw from the region's heritage of Minpei-yaki while embracing modern ceramic processes.
Made using proprietary clay blends and dry-press moulding, the unglazed surfaces rely on form, shadow and raw materiality to create a quiet visual rhythm.
Designed primarily for walls, both series also function as objects – trays, plates, or display surfaces — dissolving the boundary between utility and design.
The result is a refined, flexible material with architectural presence and sculptural depth.
This project has been longlisted in the surface design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
