India Mahdavi has designed the Crisscross, Cracks, Mycelium and Freckle tiles series for Alternative Artefacts Danto, a porcelain tile series blending traditional techniques with contemporary expression.

India Mahdavi's Crisscross, Cracks, Mycelium and Freckle tiles series for Alternative Artefacts Danto merge traditional tile-making techniques with her vibrant design sensibility.

Each explores a distinct material language: 'Crisscross' uses raised grid motifs and rhythmic surface reliefs; 'Cracks' applies crackle glaze over coloured clay for luminous depth; 'Mycelium' forms fluid crystalline patterns evoking organic growth and 'Freckles' imagines a surreal, speckled terrain through playful colour.

Produced on Awaji Island, the series showcases how heritage techniques can be reinterpreted through design, resulting in tactile and expressive surfaces that transcend conventional tile work.

This project has been longlisted in the surface design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
