Hakuten has designed Kumoo, an experiential communication tool for schools.
Kumoo is an experiential communication tool created for schools transitioning toward creativity-focused education. Named after the Japanese word 'Kumou' (loosely translating as 'Let's build together'), it promotes collaboration, play and hands-on spatial learning.
Students begin with 1:10 scale wooden models before co-designing full-scale environments using tool-free wooden units. This approach allows them to build freely with their hands and imagination, moving beyond conventional rules and limitations.
"Kumoo encourages children to express creativity and autonomy while reimagining how space is used," said Hakuten.
Crafted from offcuts and unused wood from local timber industries, it also fosters sustainability and connects students with regional craftsmanship.
This project has been longlisted in the furniture design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
