Victoria Prison – B Hall and D Hall

Napp Studio has designed the interiors of the Victoria Prison – B Hall and D Hall as part of the revamp to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Tai Kwun, the former prison turned cultural complex in Hong Kong.
The Victoria Prison exhibition is a search of cultural significance, positioning the former prison as an iconic heritage site in the city centre of Hong Kong in relation to the past, present and future.

B Hall intends to create multiple interpretations of the former colonial prison in terms of its concept, design and experience. Each cell delivers content and experience with different perspectives from former prisoners, families, staff and pastors.

D Hall, which used to be part of the hospital complex inside the prison with a mortuary, remains intent on exploring the traumatic and healing aspects of prison as a social system.

To ensure the exhibition display would not contradict the architectural language of the original prison, a series of display systems was designed based on the materiality and tectonics of prison architecture, maintaining a harmony between the exhibition and the heritage itself.

This project has been shortlisted in the exhibition interior category of Dezeen Awards China 2025.
