Piertzovanis Toews has transformed Erika and Willi's Barn into a family home in Albisheim, Germany.
In 2020, Erika and Willi began transforming an 18th-century barn despite limited funds and little building experience.
By preserving its original stone walls, oak beams and clay tiles, the duo carefully renovated the structure themselves using illustrated manuals made by the architects.
The central hayloft now features four colourful, house-like volumes, creating a playful interior respecting the historic shell. In addition, skylights and inner windows bring in light and highlight the aged textures.
The process – filled with trial, error and handmade effort – became a celebration of imperfection, patience and craft, turning a once-utilitarian space into a vibrant and personal home.
This project has been shortlisted in the house renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
