Michael Ong Design Office has altered and revitalised Park Street House, an existing brick dwelling in Melbourne, Australia.

This project addressed key spatial challenges in the home, where, despite its size, the original layout suffered from inefficient flow and poor relationships between spaces.

By removing the central living room, which created circulation blockages, and replacing it with a courtyard, the alteration drastically improved the home's functionality.

This central courtyard now serves as the heart of the house, organising all surrounding rooms while significantly enhancing natural light, ventilation and garden connectivity.

"Sold as a knock-down and rebuild opportunity, we instead looked at making thoughtful and precise changes to reimagine a new life for this post-war style dwelling," said Michael Ong.

"We saw this as a chance to preserve its history, while adapting it for the next generation."

This project has been shortlisted in the house extension category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
