Moneo Brock has designed Kimpton Mercedes, a heritage hotel in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The 130-room Kimpton Las Mercedes Hotel in Santo Domingo revives historic 16th-century structures, which blend restoration and preservation with contemporary architecture and design to create a vibrant, sustainable urban oasis.
A preserved central courtyard filled with native flora creates an oasis for guests and the city. Surrounding galleries allow cross-ventilation and provide access to the rooms, enhanced by glass louvres that echo the foliage.
To maintain a balance between old and new, the facades of the new construction step back from the street to preserve the small scale of the city.
Local materials (travertine, ceramics, wood) were chosen for their natural beauty and climate suitability, underscoring a deep respect for heritage and environment.
This project has been shortlisted in the heritage project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
